SUMMARY:DSB (die Schlauberger) at Bear Mountain Oktoberfest
DESCRIPTION:The tradition continues with dSb! Oktoberfest 2019 will be hosted at Anthony Wayne Recreation Area\, just a stone’s throw from Bear Mountain State Park – located at Exit 17 off the Palisades Parkway.\n\n\n \n\n\nFor over two decades\, die Schlauberger (dSb) has proclaimed “expect the unexpected.” Musical proof that entertainers can please just about everyone\, dSb is a powerhouse of musical expertise.\n\n\n \n\n\nPerforming festival standards to rock and roll meets alpine power; dSb expends enough energy to light up not only the crowd but the fairground as well. From the moment dSb steps on stage until they have wrung the final note from their last song\, the band engages everyone within earshot to join the fun. Their stage show has wowed crowds in venues as varied as the Trump Taj Mahal and Tropicana Casinos in Atlantic City\, the Wurstfest in New Braunfels\, TX\, Oregon’s Mt. Angel Oktoberfest\, the Hunter Mountain German Alps Festival\, the Cincinnati Oktoberfest\, German Fest Milwaukee\, Bethlehem Musikfest & NYC Carnegie Hall\, to name but a few.

SUMMARY:The Spitzbuam at Bear Mountain Oktoberfest
DESCRIPTION:The tradition continues with The Spitzbuam! Oktoberfest 2019 will be hosted at Anthony Wayne Recreation Area\, just a stone’s throw from Bear Mountain State Park – located at Exit 17 off the Palisades Parkway.\n\n\n \n\n\nDie Spitzbuam (pronounced “Sshhpit-sss-boo-ahhmm”) are a non-internationally\, non-renowned German-American dance orchestra. The name roughly means “Trouble Makers” in the German-Bavarian dialect\, however there are arguments that the translation does not fully capture the spirit of the original word. The group is generally contained within the Metropolitan New York area although they have been sighted in locations as far ranging as Rochester\, Pennsylvania and even Bermuda\, at events that are accompanied by merry-making\, food… and of course beer. Musical selection ranges from traditional and popular German and Austrian numbers\, to country/western and rock-‘n’-roll. The band is associated with and provides accompaniment for numerous German/Austrian folk dance groups.

SUMMARY:Historical Hikes
DESCRIPTION:(approximately 3.5 to 4 hours) \nPre-Registration Required (Call 845-786-2731\, ext. 1005 or mina@visitbearmountain.com) \n($20 per person – bring your own lunch – $10 Parking Fee to Park not included) \n9:00 AM HIKE FROM BEAR MOUNTAIN INN TO DOODLETOWN: \nHiking Description from Pattye\, NY Certified Hiking Guide: The Hike to Doodletown is a moderate hike that will take us to what was once a thriving community. Just a short hike from the Bear Mountain Inn we will walk a historic trail to discover this village that once was. Although there are no buildings there are signposts at the site of each once describing what was there and who lived there. There is also a waterfall\, which is better in the spring or rainy season and an old reservoir each are perfect spots for a picnic. There are two cemeteries; one is still in use by one of the families that inhabited Doodletown. A hike to Doodletown is great any time of year but if you like to see the foundations of the buildings I recommend the fall and early spring when there isn’t as much growth and they are less likely to be covered. It is a moderate hike following the historic 1777 trail\, it is the route taken by British troops under Sir Henry Clinton on October 6\, 1777 to attack the American forces at Fort Clinton and Fort Montgomery. These forces would have split at Doodletown one faction going around Bear Mountain to Fort Montgomery and the other continuing through Doodletown. We will leave the 1777 trail before Doodletown and follow an old woods road down to what they called the swimming hole. And if there is water\, a nice water fall. Continuing along this woods road we will pass a test hole for a mine by Thomas Edison. He owned 194 acres here and was involved in a project to extract iron ore with magnets. But he abandoned his iron projects after the price of iron dropped when the Mesabi Range mines opened in Minnesota. He sold the property to the park in 1928. We will join the Pleasant Valley Road which will take us through Doodletown passing markers designating homes along the way. Stop for a lunch or snack at Doodletown Reservoir and then continue back to Bear Mountain Inn. The hike is approximate 4 miles and I also suggest we take small garbage bags with us to help show a little love to our park and pick any litter we may find along the trail. (Shouldn’t be much) For this hike the guests will need hiking shoes\, boots not necessary\, water\, and a snack or lunch. \n2:00 PM HIKE TO WEST MOUNTAIN (STRENUOUS HIKE): http://bearmountainhikes.wixsite.com/hiking-harriman/strenuous-hikes Hiking Description from Pattye\, NY Certified Hiking Guide: This hike is one of my favorites and there are lots of viewpoints. It is strenuous and will require hiking boots or shoes. We will leave from Bear Mountain Inn and follow several trails to the top of West Mountain. The return trail follows a rugged trail for about one mile and hands and feet will be needed for a couple of spots on the trail. It is approximately 6 miles and will take about 4 hours. Don’t forget to pack a lunch or a snack for a break with a gorgeous view
